After venturing into the Space and automobile industry, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that the company is now working on a humanoid robot. The prototype of the robot will be built sometime next year. Musk revealed that the humanoid robot, which is called the Tesla Bot, will use most of the tools that are used in Tesla vehicles such as sensors, cameras and various other tools to navigate the outside world.

Tesla’s humanoid robot will bear the height of an average human. It is going to be 5 foot 8 inches tall. However, in place of a face, there will be a screen. It would weigh around 125 pounds and will be capable of moving at 5mph. The Tesla website has already listed the robot. It says that the humanoid robot will be capable of performing tasks that are “unsafe, repetitive or boring”. Tesla is seeking the help of mechanical, electrical, controls and software engineers to help the company leverage its AI expertise beyond their vehicle fleet.

Musk during Tesla’s first AI day said that building a robot is a logical next step for Tesla as it is already the world’s biggest robotics company. “We’re making the pieces that would be useful for a humanoid robot, so we should probably make it. If we don’t, someone else will — and we want to make sure it’s safe,” he added.

The humanoid robot which Tesla is working on could replace physical labour as per the company because it would be used to get the household chores done. Musk said that it could be used for things that are repetitive, boring or unsafe. The kind of work that people would be least interested to do. He said that the robot will change the future of work. “This, I think, will be quite profound. Essentially, in the future, physical work will be a choice. If you want to do it, you can, but you won’t need to do it,” he said.

Musk said that the robot could be a friend and hopes that it will not be looked upon as something “dystopian”.

The Tesla Bot is at a nascent stage, and we don’t even know whether the robot will ever see the light of the day. A couple of Tesla products that were showcased previously have not made it to the markets yet. Things like robotic snake-style chargers, a solar-powered network, battery swapping were never launched in the market.
