Tech tips: How to hide a particular chat without on WhatsApp deleting it, hide message previews

WhatsApp users can archive particular to stop receiving notification from them. WhatsApp is also currently rolling out a new feature for all WhatsApp users wherein it will remove the archived chat box from the top of the chat list.

WhatsaApp can often become a place where you get forwards from annoying contacts. There are times when you cannot block such contacts because they might share something useful on rare occasions. But if you are sure that you do not want to receive notifications from such contacts, you can always archive them. This will help users focus on the more important chats. WhatsApp is also currently rolling out a new feature for all WhatsApp users wherein it will remove the archived chat box from the top of the chat list. Here is how to remove the archive chat box.

WhatsApp notes that archiving a chat does not delete the chat or back it up. Moreover, for iPhone users, the feature is only available for devices with iOS 9 or later. While archiving a chat, users must note that an archived individual or group chat will unarchive when you receive a new message from that individual or group chat. Here is how users can hide chats.

For Android:

— Open WhatsApp.

— Long press on the chat you want to hide.

— Select the archive option which will appear in the form of a box with a downward arrow from the top menu.

To unhide this chat:

— In the Chats tab, tap the Search bar.
— Enter the name of the chat or content from the chat you want to unarchive.
— Long press on the chat you want to unarchive.
— Tap Unarchive.

Alternatively, users can scroll their chats till the end to find the archived chats, long-press them to unarchive.

For iPhones:

— Open WhatsApp
— Right swipe on the chat that you want to hide.
— Click the Archive button.

To unarchive chats on WhatsApp:

— In the Archived Chats screen, swipe left on the chat or group you want to unarchive.
— Tap Unarchive.

Users can manually unarchive a chat by searching for a contact name or message from that contact:

— In the Chats tab, tap the Search bar.
— Enter the name of the chat or content from the chat you want to unarchive.
— Swipe left on the chat you want to unarchive.
— Tap Unarchive.

If you want to prevent others from reading your WhatsApp notifications, you can disable message preveiews by following the given steps:

Android users can go to Phone Settings to further customise notifications:

— Go to Settings
— Select Notifications > Manage Notifications
— Select WhatsApp app
— Depending on the requirement, users can either completely turn their notifications off or selectively turn off top preview and display notification details on the unlocked screen.
— Users can also select if they want to receive notifications for sending media, call notifications, critical app alerts, etc.
— Alternately, users can go to message notifications and turn the toggle off for pop-up or sound notifications.

iPhone users can tweak the notifications by following the given steps:

— Open WhatsApp
— Go to Settings located in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
— Go to Notifications
— Disable the Show Preview option.
